Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria: - Academic performance in year 12 studies or in subsequent tertiary studies as provided through QTAC. - The written component of the application form. - Demonstration at the interview of attributes suited to a career in medicine.

ATAR: 95+ (Postgraduate applicants are recommended to have a GPA of at 5.75 and above). Currently the realistic ATAR requirements for a non-rural applicant is around 98+. Visit JUC page for more information...

Note: a Prediction of Academic Achievement form must be received by the due date otherwise your application can be voided. The due date can change slightly each year and students must check this on the JCU website (usually early October).

Subject prerequisites: English (Units 3/4,C), Mathematical Methods (Units 3/4,C), Chemistry (Units 3/4,C) The study Biology is highly desirable / recommended Also, applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3b – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy. Students also need to take note that in accordance with the National Registration Board’s requirement, they must hold a valid IELTS (academic module) minimum score of 7.0 in all components within 2 years prior to applying for registration. 

Application: JCU has a two-step application process for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery & Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

  1. Apply online at QTAC’s website by 30th September 2023.
  2. Submit a written application form directly to JCU by 30th September. (As of 2023 extended written replies to application question applies to Dentistry applicants ONLY.)
  3. International applicants must submit their internal applications directly to JCU by the 31st of August 2023.
  4. Applicants must also send their Prediction of Academic Achievement Sheet by thedue date. The written application form (and other information published by JCU or otherwise made available to students when applying), may specify additional criteria to be considered in ranking applicants in order of merit if the number of applications exceeds a quota or other limit on the places made available for the course. Information provided by applicants during the application process and any other information obtained by JCU in the application process may be used by JCU to rank applicants in order of merit by reference to those additional criteria.

JCU Medicine Interview dates and process:

IMPORTNT NOTE: based on the current information on JCU offcial website, there are no indications that applicants for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery will require to be interviewed. Therefore, we are assuming that only a limited number of applicants for the degree in Medicine will be invited for the selection interview process. Selection of applicants to be interviewed will be based on an evaluation of the application together with all available information regarding academic performance. JCU Medical Interview questions assess your communication and critical analytical skills, advocacy and ethical reasoning, empathetic reasoning, teamwork and collaboration skills, knowledge about tropical medicine, motivation to pursue medicine, and understanding of rural and remote health issues. James Cook University medical interviews are highly competitive and are conducted in two rounds. The final offers are based on your ATAR and application/interview performance.

James Cook University (JCU) medicine interview dates:

Interviews will be held from 28th November – 5th December 2023 and on 2nd and 3rd January 2024. (via Zoom) Applicants for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway will be interviews on 30th November and the 5th and 6th of December 2023. (via Zoom)

Interview Panels: Panels usually consist of a medical doctor, academic and community person. One person will be allocated as Chair for the panel. Each panel has a Zoom master, who provides support throughout the interview, and manages the technical aspects of zoom e.g. sharing the screen, bringing the applicant in and out of the interview room, etc, to enable interviewers to focus on the interview.
